Your Choice for TMJ/TMD Therapy in NW Calgary!

Sarcee Dental offers TMJ/TMD Therapy in North Calgary. For many people, jaw problems can be the source of significant discomfort, including sudden or persistent pain in the joints of your jaw, a clicking or popping sound when opening and closing your mouth, or regular headaches, among other things.  If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you might have TMJ or temporomandibular joint syndrome. If you’ve been suffering from TMJ/TMD pain in Nolan Hill Calgary, Sarcee Dental Clinic is here to help!

What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull. The joint can be found on both sides of your head in front of your ears, allowing your jaw to open and close, and enabling you to speak and eat. Calgary TMD disorders refer to several problems associated with jaw movement and pain in and around jaw joints. If you often experience a clicking or popping sound when opening and closing your mouth, you might have TMD.

What are Symptoms of TMD?

TMD symptoms are fairly common. The most significant symptom, and the most commonly reported one, is frequent headaches and migraines. Other symptoms include:

  • Grinding or clenching your teeth during the day or night
  • Frequent headaches and pain in your neck
  • Stiffness in the muscles of the jaw
  • Limited movement of the jaw
  • Locking of the jaw
  • A ‘clicking’ or ‘popping’ sound when you open your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth wide, or pain when doing so
  • You have ever suffered an injury to your neck, head, or jaw
  • Arthritis in other joints throughout the body
  • Your teeth no longer touch when you bite together (called malocclusion)
  • Symptoms may show up on just one side of the face, or both.

How do we Treat TMD/TMJ?

Sarcee Dental Clinic is committed to treating your Calgary NW TMD/TMJ and helping you eliminate the associated pain and discomfort. While there are many self-care home remedies like eating soft foods, using ice to reduce swelling, reducing jaw movements, and avoiding chewing gum or tough foods, etc, you may need help from your dental professional if your symptoms don’t improve with these treatments.

The first step in Calgary dental treatment will often be a custom night guard or splint also called an occlusal splint. This custom-fit, clear plastic dental device fits over the biting surfaces of the teeth of one jaw so that you bite against the splint rather than your teeth. This can help jaw joints and muscles relax. The hope is that it will help realign the jaw and prevent jaw clenching, which will alleviate the symptoms and pain associated with TMJ. It can also protect your teeth.

If your pain continues even with the use of an occlusal splint, your dentist may refer you to a specialist with extra training in TMD’s, called a neuromuscular dentist.
